Abstract

This study appraises the relationship between work stress, job satisfaction, and job performance among teachers in public secondary schools in Cross River State, Nigeria. A descriptive survey design was employed to assess the prevalence of occupational stressors, levels of job satisfaction, and their impact on teaching effectiveness. The study population comprised 5,250 public secondary school teachers across the three senatorial districts of the state, with a stratified random sample of 450 teachers selected to ensure proportional representation. Data were collected using a 40-item validated questionnaire, and responses were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation coefficient. Findings revealed weak and statistically insignificant correlations between work stress, job satisfaction, and job performance, indicating that stress levels did not substantially affect teachers' satisfaction or performance. Consequently, the null hypothesis was not rejected, suggesting that other contextual factors may influence job outcomes. The study concludes that institutional support, workload management, and professional development may be more critical in enhancing teacher effectiveness. It recommends stress management strategies, continuous professional development, and advocacy for improved working conditions to support teacher well-being and performance.
