Abstract

Breast cancer is still one of the most prominent causes of morbidity and mortality in women globally, which highlights the need for novel therapeutic strategies. The present study performs a systematic review to assess the possible role of medicinal mushrooms Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum), Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), and Cordyceps (Cordyceps sinensis) in treating breast cancer. Medicinal mushrooms have bioactive molecules such as polysaccharides, triterpenoids, and beta-glucans that are immunomodulatory, apoptotic, and anti-angiogenic. The study combines data from preclinical and clinical trials and publicly accessible databases such as SEER and WHO cancer reports. The results indicate that medicinal mushrooms enhance immune function, suppress tumour growth, and reverse chemotherapy-induced toxicity, with favourable patient outcomes. The scarcity of large-scale randomized clinical trials and regulatory standardization prevents their integration into oncology. This study emphasizes the need for further clinical confirmation, standardized treatment regimens, and licensing permissions to ensure increased adoption of medicinal mushrooms in standard breast cancer treatment. In bridging the divide between traditional medicine, medicinal mushrooms have the potential to become wonderful adjuncts in integrative oncology with long-term value through patient survival as well as an improved quality of life.
