Abstract

This study examines the impact of internet usage on the study habits of Lagos State University students. Using a survey research design, 318 students participated, and a simple random sampling technique was employed. The analysis was done using simple regression at a 5% significance level. The findings revealed a significant relationship between internet usage and study habits (r = -0.718, p < .05), indicating that while the internet influences study habits, it may also have negative effects. Additionally, the study found that study habits significantly affect academic performance (Beta = 0.732, t = 19.017, p < .05), highlighting the importance of effective study strategies. Furthermore, internet usage was found to significantly influence academic performance (Beta = -0.673, t = 16.100, p < .05), suggesting that excessive or improper use of the internet can negatively impact grades. The study concludes that the internet has a dual effect on students: it can be both beneficial and distracting. Therefore, it is recommended that institutions incorporate internet usage into learning strategies while monitoring and guiding students on its proper use. This would ensure that the internet enhances, rather than hinders, academic success.
