The urgency of decarbonization in the oil and gas sector cannot be overstated, as climate change poses a significant threat to the planet. It is also imperative as the global economy transitions toward a low-carbon future. Efforts to reduce carbon emissions are crucial for mitigating climate change and ensuring the long-term sustainability of energy industries. Nigeria, as one of the largest oil and gas producers in Africa, faces both challenges and opportunities in aligning with global decarbonization efforts. This paper examines key strategies for achieving net-zero carbon emissions within Nigeria's oil and gas sector, focusing on deploying carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), renewable energy integration, and electrification of operations. These technological innovations, alongside implementing firm policy frameworks such as those advanced by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), can accelerate Nigeria's decarbonization trajectory. Operational changes like optimizing energy efficiency, reducing flaring, and adopting cleaner fuels are explored as essential measures for the industry. The implications of these efforts for Nigeria's oil and gas sector are significant, requiring collaborative engagement from both the government and private sector. By adopting cutting-edge technologies and enhancing public-private partnerships, Nigeria can meet global decarbonization targets and secure a more sustainable energy future for the nation.
