Abstract

Gully erosion presents a significant environmental challenge in Anambra State, Nigeria, affecting land use, infrastructure, and socio-economic activities. This study focuses on the comprehensive assessment and management of gully erosion sites within the state. Through a combination of field surveys, remote sensing, and GIS analysis, the extent, severity, and underlying causes of gully erosion were evaluated. Various control measures, including re-vegetation, better agricultural practices, drainage management, proper land use management, and early response, were recommended as measures in mitigation of the erosion problem. The findings underscore the critical implications for urban planning, highlighting the need for integrated land use planning and sustainable development strategies to address the erosion problem effectively. This study provides a framework for policymakers and planners in Anambra State to enhance environmental resilience and protect valuable land resources.
