Abstract

This paper investigated the optimization of CTS oil-based biodiesel-diesel blends performance in diesel engine. The primary objective of the study is the determination of the optimum process parameter (blend ratio, torque and engine speed for best Brake Specific Fuel Consumption (BSFC) and the Brake Thermal Efficiency (BTE) as well as the determination of performance characteristic of CTS oil-based biodiesel blend in single cylinder diesel engine. Optimization study showed that 5.5% CTS oil-based biodiesel-diesel blend ratio, 6 Nm torque and 1900 rpm engine speed favors the minimization of BSFC and maximization of BTE in combustion engines, the parameters (blend ratio, torque and speed) considered in the study were significant in assessing the performance of the blended biodiesel on combustion engine and the optimization achieved was reliable for best BSFC and BTE for CTS oil-based biodiesel blend with petroleum diesel. The performance characteristic of CTS oil-based biodiesel blend with petroleum diesel shows that increase in engine speed result in a decrease in BSFC and an increase in BTE for CTS oil-based biodiesel blend in combustion engine without engine modification, BSFC and BTE are highly sensitive to change in torque and less sensitive to blend ratio and speed. Therefore, CTS oil which is non-edible is a promising oil for biodiesel production and biodiesel-diesel blends of up to 20% biodiesel for use as fuel for diesel engines without any engine modification.
