Abstract

This paper explores the themes of ethics and politics in U.R. Ananthamurthy’s novel Avasthe. Divided into three sections, Avasthe presents the protagonist Krishnappa as a character shaped by modern culture and self-made values, standing in contrast to other figures from Ananthamurthy's works, such as Praneshacharya from Samskara and Jagannatha from Bharatipura. Through interactions with several key figures, Krishnappa navigates political struggles, ethical dilemmas, and personal introspection, illustrating the clash between idealism and reality. The novel’s exploration of political power, humanism, and personal integrity is set against the backdrop of evolving societal and individual values. Krishnappa’s journey in Avasthe becomes an ethical model, offering insights into the complexities of human nature and governance. Through a detailed analysis, this paper investigates how the novel interrogates the relationship between personal ethics and political power, and how self-realization becomes the fulcrum for Krishnappa’s ethical awakening.
